Annual Courage House Awards Luncheon

The Courage House Awards Luncheon represents a unique collaboration with the Carolina Panthers. In 1989, the Ed Block Courage Award Foundation created the Courage House National Support Network for Kids, made up of facilities that provide support and quality care for abused children and their families in each NFL city. Each NFL team chooses a local organization that works with abused and neglected children, and in 1999 the Panthers chose Youth Homes as the team’s Courage House affiliate and that relationship was extended to CHS through the 2010 merger between the two agencies. Each year, we celebrate this special relationship at the annual Courage House Awards Luncheon held in the Panthers Den at Bank of America Stadium.

The luncheon also features the announcement of the Carolina Panthers Ed Block Courage Award Winner, a Panthers player who is chosen by his teammates as representing a source of inspiration and courage. Past winners include Mike Rucker, Steve Smith, Steve Beuerlein, and Jake Delhomme. The event also includes the presentation of the CHS Courage Award, given to a child or family who has overcome challenges and demonstrated that “Courage is shown on many different playing fields.”

The 2010 luncheon featured a keynote address by Sam Bracken, inspirational speaker and author of My Orange Duffel Bag, a unique memoir detailing his journey from abused, homeless youth to standout football player at Georgia Tech. Guests were also able to participate in a silent auction featuring sports memorabilia from Tommy Stines/Golf Services Unlimited and jewelry from Perry’s of SouthPark.

Event sponsors included General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products, BOMA Carolinas-West Virginia, Bank of America, The Andover Group at UBS, Mr. and Mrs. Brian Barry and The Capital Grille-Charlotte.
