Types of Foster Care

Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see.

Infant Foster Care

CHS offers foster care services for children of birth parents who are considering an adoption plan. The foster family and medical staff closely supervise the physical, emotional, and medical needs of the child. These services are available only to birth parents releasing children directly to CHS.

Family Foster Care
Family Foster Care is 24-hour care provided in a family setting. Children placed in these homes may have mild behavioral or emotional issues. Foster parents need to be prepared to provide children in their care with love, understanding, and patience. Many children living in foster care struggle with feelings of loss, abandonment, and low self-esteem. The relationship developed between a foster parent and a child can be of strong significance and of great comfort to the child.

Therapeutic Foster Care
Considered a form of mental health treatment, therapeutic foster care is for children who have intensive emotional or behavioral needs. These children may have cognitive or behavioral issues, developmental delays, aggressive behaviors, and often need support and supervision to help manage their health, welfare, and safety. Therapeutic foster parents complete additional training to enable them to do the best possible job caring for a child.

Respite Care
Respite Care is care provided to a child for a short period by someone other than their foster family. During this time, the foster family is temporarily relieved of their daily parental responsibilities for the foster child in order to rest and refresh themselves. Usually the care is limited from several hours to several days or a weekend.
